Spring 2015 Bulletin

Dear Friend,

Here is our latest bulletin following the updating of the website.

Pilgrimage for schools.

We are pleased to announced that the veteran pilgrim and secondary school teacher, John Cudlipp (above), has taken up the appointment as Schools Liaison Officer. His task is to help schools insert acts of pilgrimage into the curriculum. These will also help students qualify for awards available from extracurricular schemes like the Duke of Edinburgh’s, Saltire, John Muir and Caritas. Any queries to John Cudlipp via the website.

Pilgrim Survey.

Summer Event at St Andrews

Planning to do your pilgrimage to St Andrews in July? Why not arrive during the New Dawn celebrations from the 6th – 10th July 2015, then take part in the procession through St Andrews and attend the high mass in the ancient ruined Cathedral. Everyone is welcome, whatever religion or belief.

More details on the celebrations are available at http://www.newdawninscotland.com/

Members already attending the celebrations are invited to start one of their days with a short pilgrimage walk, about 5 km, from Craigtoun, overlooking St Andrews. Map details at http://www.bikemap.net/en/route/1481835-st-margarets-way-earlsferry-to-st-andrews/#/z14/56.30655,-2.81504/terrain

Pilgrim Twitter

The Way of St. Andrews is now using social media and is available on twitter. This is a fantastic opportunity for pilgrims to connect and share experiences and information. News regarding the various routes will be updated regularly with links to other sites which may be of interest when planning or considering tackling any of the pilgrimages throughout Scotland.

Spring Pilgrim Tip

This comes from the Reverend Andrew Patterson, one of the founder members of the Green Pilgrimage Network (http://greenpilgrimage.net/), shocked at the rubbish left by pilgrims along the way and the additional burden on the local public services.

“Take reusable water bottles and food containers.”

 Simple and easy to follow!

Other Scottish Pilgrimage News

  • Serial pilgrim and Celtic scholar, Gilbert Marcus, has taken on a new pilgrimage project in Argyll, which aims to show the Cowal peninsula as a landscape attractive to pilgrims or ‘faith tourists’. This will include a new route for pilgrims to Iona via the Gourock-Dunoon ferry and through the lovely glens of Cowal. The website is http://www.faithincowal.org
  • The revival of pilgrimage in Scotland has gone hand-in-hand with research into the Celtic saints. Written records are sparse, but many of the stories and traditions are still handed down and preserved verbally in parishes. In particular, we are looking for traditions which associate particular saints with the healing of certain ailments or which could be applied to the ailments of the modern era.
  • All roads lead to St Andrews.  There are already 2 main pilgrim routes through Fife to St Andrews, Saint Margaret’s Way along the Fife coast path and Saint Columba’s way from Iona and via Perth. These will shortly be joined by the Fife Pilgrim Way, about 70 miles long, starting at Culross and passing through ancient Christian settlements and modern thriving communities of central Fife to St Andrews. The organisers urgently want your thoughts and suggestions via their online survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/FifePilgrimWay
