St Andrews Circuit

Part of Routes and photos

Description

For over 500 years until the Reformation, pilgrims arrived to worship at the shrine of St Andrew where his relics were held, eventually to be housed within the great cathedral which was consecrated in 1318 in the presence of King Robert the Bruce.

Many of these pilgrims arrived at the West Port, the start of this 6 km St Andrews Circuit. So, starting at the Whey Pat Inn where medieval pilgrims got a welcoming hot meal,  go back in time and travel forward through the rich history of St Andrews. The circuit takes you round over twenty places of cultural, religious, or historical interest, from the Blue Stone of Pictish days, with its magical properties, to the beaches famous for the filming of Chariots of Fire.

Our thanks to the members of the St Andrews Preservation Trust for their help in planning the circuit.
